New to raising chicks this year, I currently have 4 blue australorps (the last 4 available at a nearby feed store… in hindsight should’ve seen that as a sign) and am afraid I’ve wound up with 4 Roos.
Wives tales were somewhat reliable for 3 of them… large feet, red combs coming in early, larger in size, super friendly… but now that they’re 7 weeks old they’re looking a bit different.
I’ll post a picture of 2 separate chickens. One has a darker red comb, and the other has a pale comb, Is smaller in size, is more timid, and has different shaped back and tail feathers. Curious if I might have a hen after all?
First picture is what I suspect is a roo (?) with a red comb that started coming in a couple weeks ago. The second picture is what I’m hoping is a hen. Paler comb, hard to tell but smaller in stature, and when her tail is down her back is much more fluffy and rounded similar to my other sexed hens also 7 weeks old.
Do I have 2 Roos here or is my wishful thinking paying off?
