Hen or Rooster!?

Please completely disregard above comments. From an experienced chicken owner and veteran BYC member, the Production Red is a point-of-lay pullet. She has no sex characteristics of a male. At this age, she would have saddle feathers/much more masculine features. The Buff Orpington is a cockerel. Orpingtons are typically a bit slower to mature versus hatchery Rhode Island Reds are bred to mature very quickly. That is leading to a discrepancy in the relative maturity of both birds :)
Agreed.

Thank you for your insight!! It gives me hope!! I’ve reached out to a few sanctuaries for my buff, but holding onto the RIR unless things change! Wish I could keep the buff too, but sadly it would cause too many issues with my neighbors. Thank you again!!

I found through this group that I don’t actually know what a rooster/hen looks like 😂🤣…only way I know for sure is posting here or seeing them produce an egg.

Here is my hen that is a similar breed (possibly an RIR, but probably not pure)

Hey! I've been around Buff Orpintons and Rhode Island Reds for a while now, and I agree that the Orpington is a roo and the RIR is a hen. Good luck with your chickens!
