before chickens start laying, is there a visual difference between a hen's cloaca/vent & a cockerel/rooster anus? we have a juvenile rhode island red that we think is a hen, but she's (?) not laying (yet?). i looked at her butt & it looks like a hen's vent, but i haven't purposely looked at a rooster anus, so i'm not sure! any help is appreciated!

A vent is a vent (cloaca). Only experts can tell the difference at hatch, but I suppose you could find the male parts easier on a grown bird. This seems entirely unnecessary though since there are many external signs at that age, like hackle/saddle/sickle feathers. Just post a pic.

I agree, just post a pic. There are a lot easier ways to tell gender than checking out their vents at this age. A profile pic of the bird standing naturally and the age of the bird in weeks will give you the best answers.
