My hen is currently recovering from being eggbound with a broken egg. I’ve noticed immediately that she is willing to eat the small crumbs of the layer pellets I set out for her but not the full pellets. This morning I crushed them up and she was willing to eat them and then wash it down with water on her own! I’m wondering if I should keep feeding her these layer pellets crushed, or buy layer crumbles, or feed her some of my starter-grower crumbles I’m using for my pullets. What do you think?

I have a hen on the road to recovery from being egg bound with a broken egg. She sits in a box all day and likes to jump out and explore her room. I’m moving her to a crate so she can’t get out however she is super bored and I can tell just by looking at her. However I want her to eat the crumble I gave her and only that so what are some border busters that don’t involve food (or at least not food that isn’t her crumble)
You can buy a small bag of chick starter if she likes the crumble better. You can continue to crush the layer feed or even offer her a wet mash.

Boredom buster....take her outside to visit the flock.

I had thought about letting her visit the flock but I think that it would be best not to since it’s much to hot for her out there. I could bring one of my barred rocks to her though. I’ll try crumbling the layer feed since she really needs all the calcium in it

I drill holes in a clear plastic water bottle then fill it with crumble and mealworms. If you get the hole size right, the hen will kick and scratch at the bottle all day trying to get the mealworms, but only the crumble will fall out. I know it's a terrible tease... but it keeps my birds busy all day.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

It has been terribly hot!
Bringing in a visitor may help break up her day. I hope she gets better soon!
