Hi,

My name is "Rustic Light". I'm a 36-year-old country girl living in California...with a Nankin (100% Nankin?) Bantam rooster named Bo Charleston.

I am a former 4-H Poultry member (I used to show Bantams at 4-H Poultry shows, and at the fair), and I owned Bantams (Polish, Silkies, and Plymouth Rocks) when I was in 4-H.

Last October, I acquired Bo from a family member, who rescued him when he was let loose...on purpose by his owner at a public event. He was corralled in a temporary "Saloon" tent, and, when he was brought to me, my family simply said something like, "We brought you a chicken!" Not understanding what they meant (I hadn't gone to said event, so I had no idea that a real bird was waiting outside for me), I replied with, "What? You've got a rotisserie CHICKEN out there for me, and I just spent all that time cooking dinner for myself?" LOL!

Well, anyway, I took to sweet little Bo right away, and now, he's truly anxious to meet the two girls that I keep promising to bring home to him. I've had him since October, and I'm thinking that he's about a year old by now, and that it's not fair for me to let him keep waiting for companionship out there in the coop, otherwise known as..."The Cabin of The Rustic Light".

I've been WANTING to bring two avian companions home for awhile, but non-Silkie Bantams seem to be in short supply here these days, and I don't want Polish or Silkie birds again, because, as pretty as they are, they tend to pick up large, annoying head lice.

I just realized that my local feed store sells Frizzle Bantams, but I want to make sure that they sell Frizzle HENS, and that they are NOT Frizzle Silkie, OR Frizzle Polish mixes (I think that two Frizzle Cochin mixes would actually be pretty cool).

I recently took Bo over to visit the neighbor's chickens...through the fence. The neighbor brought one of her Silkie hens over, and Bo got along so well with that little girl, and she with him, that I promised him two hens, one of which would be as white as the neighbor's Silkie.

The white hen's name is going to be Bianca Belle, and, if I can get a darker hen, her name will be Breanna Beth.

This week, I am going to sprinkle some food-grade Diatomaceous Earth in the coop, so that Bo can get over a slight case of...body lice...ACK! If I get those Frizzle chicks, I want to make certain that the lice problem is well under control...

As you can see, I think that Goldie Pheasant from "Rock-A-Doodle" is one super cool gal!

Well, I am glad to be here, and I look forward to talkin' chickens with everyone!

Bye for Now,
Rustic Light

glad you have joined us.

Hope you can find Bo Charleston the companions you seek.

Sorry about his lice and hope you get it resolved soon. This is a great example of what everyone describes as biosecurity for our pets.

Enjoy the forums.

I've had never gotten good results from DE, it is a waste of $$. If your really want the lice gone (and frizzle crests get them just as well as polish or silkie) get a real product for the problem and use as directed. Also if you use nipple waterers, the topknots don't get dunked repeatedly in the water dish) which attract parasites. If you were just using DE on your polish and silkies - that's why they kept having them.
