Okay, i'm new here so before i start blurting out questions i figured i'd say hello to everyone first......HOWDY

Secondly, my question is actually about maggots in quail poop, but i figured it's not that different than chicken poop except in size (i do own chickens, but this problem doesn't affect them)

I have my quail pens set up in my garage in order to protect the little guys from the elements and keep them laying through winter (i hope) and after a short period of time i realized they produce an extraordinary amount of poop.....so, i fashoned some poop catchers out of plastic 55 gallon drums cut in half and screwed together. These things work awesome and i have virtually no poop on the floor to clean up anymore. The problem i have is that after only a few days, the poop is crawling with THOUSANDS of maggots.

I was wondering if anyone knew of something i could sprikle, spray or even stick a voo doo pin into that would kill the maggots without making the poop toxic when i dump it into the pasture?

I've read other posts till my eyes went crossed and didn't seem to find anything except for maybe ACV but i didn't find a ratio or even confirmation that would actually do the trick.

please help before i accidentally develope the first killer strain of fly.

Thanks,
Fitzy

Stall Dry sprinkled on top. (cheaper than DE).

It'll lesson the oder a lot which will attract much less flys and it will dry out the poo.

Wood pellets AND stall dry would dry out the poo as well. The wood pellets break down into fine saw dust when it gets wet.

WELCOME to BYC's.

Chickens love maggots.

Ok, so reading this post answered my question about your pic in another post. You used 55 gall drums cut in half. Very good idea.

How do you clean them out? And how often?

I have a similar idea with my rabbit pens. I have tin roofing material sloped out, where I jsut hose them off every day.. Then I take the pail and dump it in the manure pile.

could you posible raise the one end, so it slopes down, and then rinse it off with a hose, and collect the water and droppings to toss? With the jet nozzle on the water gun--it doesn't use much water to do this.

Why thank you!

well, that's actually what spawned this post....i just put them together about a week and a half ago.....after spending several hours with a snow shovel cleaning the preceding weeks poo off the floor. I had noticed maggots then, but not NEARLY the amount i see now. I assume the concrete floor helped dissipate the moisture, and now that the poo falls into the plastic barrels it stays moist for much longer periods of time making for a fly's breeding paradise.

The idea is that i can collect poop for 3-4 weeks so that in the winter i can just wait for a nice day to clean them out.....here in KS it can go from 6 degrees to 60 within a day! I'm hoping that the cleaning process will be nothing more than hooking a chain from the poop sled to my lawn tractor and dragging them out of the garage and flipping them over......

That actually posed another question...anyone happen to know what a cubic foot/yard/cm of bird poop weighs

? I might have to reinforce these things!

Almost forgot....Thanks Sweetcheeks! I'm gonna check into that stuff. Especially if it'll help with odor !!!

My DE or Stall Dry does not kill maggots in the poop tray of my stacked brooder.

I have found that you have to clean at least once a week to keep the "magatonis" away. I throw my poop in the pasture and it dries out very fast and the flies don't like it then.

can you post pics of your poop catchers and coop! im very interested! i would like some poop catchers of my own! sorry to go off topic, but in my experience (this week) it is impossible to drown them. i did use sevin dust on them once and that took care of it. but i also cleaned the area out and put down lime and new shavings, so dont know if it would work if there is still poo there.

eta: lime will take down the smell
