I need to quickly feed some quail, so I need some advice! What are some household items I can feed my quails! I would assume things like oat, and rice, but would like to clarify!

Please tell me this is poor planing and you just ran out of your regular food rather than having bought some quail without thinking about how you are going to get their food first. This is a pretty good guide..

The link that Canina provided has a thorough list of common pantry stuff that you can feed them in a pinch.

Don't give them overly processed stuff with sugar and additives. Plain oats is fine, cream of wheat is fine, instant oats with tons of sugar is not.

If your pantry is bare and all you've got is like, rice or whatever, then offer some hard boiled egg to provide some more protein.

Don’t worry, I have quail feed. It is just running low, and I need options to make it larger until I can get more. It is not finished, and so far I have been adding chia seeds and crushed oat to the mixture.

Could quinoa and chia seeds work?

Quinoa I think has a coating on it that might need rinsing first. I've never fed it to anything myself but chia seeds are nutritionally great. I would just not fed in bulk in case in swells in their stomach or something but you're mixing it with regular food so I'm sure it'd be fine

Ah, ok, fair enough,-sorry if I came off a bit strong :thumbsup

I feed our quail fresh foods regularly and have tried different foods. Some of the stuff below may not be in the average pantry b/c they are not people food.

In you pantry
Barley (fermented)
Plain corn flakes/cheerios (I prefer crumbled).
Plain uncooked Oatmeal
Millet
Chia
Oat berries
Plain Peanuts (and other nuts)

Mealworms
Crickets
Or a turtle food mix (the kind that has dried insects & pick out mealworms and crickets)

In your yard/fridge
Grass seed (grass untreated w/ pesticides)
Seeds from garden greens
Sliced garden greens like mizuna, chard, spinach, etc.
Pumpkin/squash

Cut or mashed up peas

Chopped up peppers.

Amaranth seed (the kind with edible leaves) (a few studies show this may effect your birds’ ability to put on weight, but nothing conclusive).

Probably in your yard: Chopped up dandelion & plantain. Even if it’s winter where you are, you may find these plants in your yard.

Our winters are not conducive to gardening so I turn to sprouts. You’ll need a jar and a sieve like cover. I’ve had immense success sprouting cat grass & broccoli seeds.

Serious Pinch

Fish food (I found this out by dropping some fish flakes accidentally. There’s nothing out there saying this is good or bad, but my birds are still alive.)

Homemade plain hummus (garlic may be ok, but be careful of the salt in store bought)

Baby food (be weary of the salt & sugar)

Bird food (primarily parakeet millet)

You don’t need a reason to feed your quail something new. As usual w/ treats, feed most of these sparingly.

Hope this helps!

I wory about the sugar in Cheerios but love the suggestion of dandelion and plantain. Very useful underrated free food for both humans and animals. So many lawn plants like speedwell, clover and the more obvious chickweed to choose from.

As for the fish food as far as I know it’s mostly stuff like sprulina and fish meal so a decent protein source. I would have to do more Googling but strikes me as something they would enjoy on the odd occasion.
