My dog has arthritis. The vet recommended a prescription of rimadyl for arthritis, which didn't help him all that much. Also after doing some research, I learned that it actually breaks down the joints over time anyway despite providing a feeling of relief for a while.

I started giving my dog green lipped mussel supplements and for the past year, this has been a miracle for him! If you haven't heard of this stuff, give it a try for your pup. However, he is starting to have some more limpy days as he continues to age. I'm considering upping the dose on that, but I was also wondering if anyone knows of any other good supplements or home remedies for arthritis. What do you do for your pup or kitty?

As my dogs age I make sure to feed them food with glucosamine and chondroitin in it. Both of my dogs' kibble has it. But you can get them in supplement form to add to their food as well.

Good to know about the green-lipped mussel supplements. I hadn't heard of that. I give my arthritic chicken tart cherry extract but I don't know if that works for dogs.

Your reply came in just as I sent my last one.

Thanks for this! Yes, that's another supplement I will have to try. I've heard good things.

And yes, absolutely try the green lipped mussel! It can even be used as a preventative measure because it builds up the joint. I would have started sooner if I knew. Now I'm playing a bit of catch up. I buy the Swanson brand online and it's only about $8 per bottle I think. If you get the one specific to dogs, it's usually more expensive but is the same quality to my knowledge. Just buy the off-brand human stuff.

We have a product here (I'm not sure if it's available elsewhere) called "4cyte" it's a joint supplement and has green lipped mussel it seems! It comes in forms for dogs, cats and horses.
It's pretty popular with my vet clinic, we stock it and our clinic dog is even on it.
I'll likely put my dog on it soon as she's getting older.

Thanks!! Great to know as both of my dogs are about 6 years old now.

Thank you both! I will see if I can try all three of your suggestions. I can probably get the egg shell membrane and fish oil as supplements.

@Ilovemychicks08 what types of berries are you referring to?
Blueberries specifically but strawberries have their benefits to.
Blueberries are a antioxidant.
