How can I find a place to rent that allows chickens?

I currently own my home and have two pet chickens. I love them and don't want to have to give them up! But my husband and I will likely have to move across the country soon and will have to rent. We won't be buying in the new place because it's out of our price range and we also aren't sure it will be a long-term enough move to warrant it. Is there a way, when searching rentals, to see if chickens are allowed by the landlord? I know they are largely allowed by ordinance in the area we're going. I'm pretty distraught at the thought of having to give them up! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi..we live in NW PA. We own 35 rental properties.... but we do not allow pets. However...we have a house on our farm that we rent..and we have let people with a cow, turkeys, and currently a cat live there..because it’s on our land and we have a little more lee-way...perhaps you could find a duplex? I really hope you find someone who cares...I understand

You will only know if you ask the landlord or rental manager. Ask if pets are allowed? Ask about the backyard - is it secure? do you share it with other people? is there room for a little coop?

Also, ask about the are on the BYC state thread that you are moving to. Someone there may have some good info for you.

Also if you are in the US moving from one state to another you must follow protocol for vaccinations and vet testing and health certificates etc. for all states you pass through on your move.

Are your chickens inside chickens or outdoor chickens? If they are inside pets then if I would only search advertisements that allow pets. If they are outdoor pets, I would only search houses as most apartments/condos/etc. do not allow for the keeping of animals in the common outdoor areas. Then ask the landlords of any properties you are interested in. Then confirm with the town/county/etc. that it is within ordinance.

If I was a landlord I would seek out people who would keep chickens, I have noticed that chicken keepers tend to be people of high moral quality. Although I did meet some dishonest people who try to make a quick buck selling something that wasn't what they claimed for the most part the chicken folks I dealt with were just good high quality people.

I noticed when looking in our area that some areas allow hens only, no roosters, other areas would allow only 1 rooster with a couple to few hens.
