How do I breed easter eggers?

Does anyone know what breeds people use to make first generation easter eggers? If you get a hen and rooster EE from a hatchery and hatch their offspring, will they be easter eggers?

Thanks!

Yes they will be Easter Eggers. Hatcheries spent many years so were not exactly sure what breeds they are. But an Easter egger roo over EE hen makes an Easter egger. But usually it’s considered an EE if it is a mutt especially if it has muffs and beards, so if it is not pure then it’s an EE.

Does crossing wyandotte rooster to ee hens make more easter eggers? Answer is maybe, it depends. The resulting chicks will likely have yellow shanks & small muffs & beards if any at all. (If the ee hen is clean-faced, f1 offspring will be clean faced too.)But the main criteria is will the offspring lay either blue or green eggs? Re blue colored eggs, u will not get blue eggs from this cross since the wyandotte roo has no blue egg gene, only brown, to contibute. If the easter egger hen lays blue eggs, all of the offspring will lay light green eggs. So that cross DOEs result in easter eggers. If the ee hen lays green eggs, u will get 25% green eggs, 75% brown. An offspring hen with yellow legs, no muffs/beard, and that lays brown eggs would not in my mind be considered an ee.

Using an EE rooster is a gamble. You don't know what egg color genetics he will contribute to the resulting chicks. What i do to guarantee blue egg genetics and to end up with only blue, green or olive egg layers is to use only purebred araucana or ameraucana roosters. I currently have a lavender ameraucana rooster over a mixed flock and mostly end up with black or grey offspring. Never ended up with a brown egg layer. Start with a fun mixed flock of hens and the offspring will be equally interesting and unique.

I need a tailed blue egg rooster ... should I attempt this :

My Pure rumpless black Araucana rooster

+

One of my Ameraucana (EE) Hens w/bluest egg. (I believe I have 2 hens that are actually mcmurray hatchery ameraucanas.)

=

Pick the Best EE Rooster with no tuffs and has a tail.

+

All my F1 tailed EE hens with tails that lay blue and green eggs.

=

Pea comb Easter egger chicks with a high probability of laying eggs with shades of blue and green?
Or should I just buy a nice ameraucana rooster to breed to my EE hens?
