How do roosters lose spurs?

Hello-

I just noticed that my dominant rooster is missing the spur on one leg. There is a black scab where the spur used to be.

I haven't been home during the day when the flock is out - not sure why/what may have caused it. I'll keep an eye on it for infection - anything else I should be checking out?

Last year a few weeks apart my 4 year old rooster lost both of his spurs when I wasn't around. I noticed each one like you have described. I did nothing since they weren't discovered until after the fact, and each one has grown back with a dulled end. I assumed that he injured them somehow. We have one other rooster, his subordinate, and they don't seem to ever fight.
