I have a Barred Rock hen who is basically at the bottom of the pecking order. She constantly gets pecked by a number of my other hens. They seem to peck at two certain spots (probably from blood all ready there). The sores are red and swelled and are where her wings connect to her body. They are very tender.(as i've found out by trying to pick her up). Does anybody have any ideas of how to help the sores heal, or how to keep her from getting beat up?

Can you post a few photos of her injuries?

Do you have a rooster?

Do you have a dog crate type cage that will fit inside your coop where you can house her for while?

I would clean the sores out really well. Use a saline solution or Vetricyn. Then you could put neosporin (without pain med) and wrap her. You could also give her some aspirin to help with the pain. BluKote is also an excellent idea. I use it and it works great.

They make hen saddles to put over the shoulders and back on chickens who have been pecked. I would get the BluKote or WoundKote from local feed store to spray on the red areas until you get a hen saddle. You can look around online for special hen saddles with should protectors until the feathers grwo back during her next big molt. Here is a link and a picture:

Make sure your hens are not overcrowded, and that they are getting a balanced chicken layer feed. Pegging is usually from overcrowding and boredom. Here is a hen saddle with a shoulder protector:

Thanks guys for all your help! Today her sores seemed better. Some of her other feathers have covered the sores. I think I will try some of that blukote stuff and vaseline. I was thinking of putting a separate enclosure outside the main pen for her with a covered dog crate to sleep and lay eggs in. Do you think that will help? if so, how long should i keep her in there?
