how do you keep your coop smelling fresh for your ducks ?

We use sawdust and hay

  • Fine sawdust for them to sit down on mainly in the large area of the coop
  • Hay in the rear section of the coop where they lay there lovely eggs
  • And freshly cut lavender buds mixed in to the sawdust.
  • Ventilation is absolute key to keeping the smell down but also helping to replace that damp wet air that the ducks make when coming in from the pool
  • We have a heated floor to help keep the sawdust dry (ish) and we also use a IR lamp if it’s really cold and damp, I know a lot of people say “ ducks are hardy, they don’t need a heat lamp” but I like to make sure my boys and girls are snug, so controlling the temperature in the coop is a big point of interest for my self.
  • We have a vinyl floor with white rock walls (plastic-sheet) so it’s pretty much a quick spray and scrub, then finish up by using a squeegee to remove any water from the walls and floor
  • We did use lavender oil in the sawdust, but this was costly. And I prefer the more natural approach.

I thought I spoiled my ducks...this is amazing! Sounds like you are doing an amazing job keeping things clean and fresh.

I don't use heat lamps and it gets -30 deg F here with a lot of snow. They are very hardy and are fine with a lot of straw and pine shavings. Wind blocks are key.

Thank you very much, it can be such a difficult task scratching off dry poop and the smell that lingers in the timber is difficult to remove, so I sort of borrowed the materials from work. -30F ? That’s like -34c that’s insane!! When it’s -3 here every one moans about how cold it is. I always try to set out maintenance and cleaning to be easy and accessible as possible, it takes like 20 minutes, which gives me more time to cuddle and spend with the flock. I did see on you tube a lady who used the old food bags as a wind block, very smart
