If they can fly at this age?

I just revamped my coop. Wood all the way around the cage to try to keep from losing another one. It is 17 inches high. They are 4 days old now. Im thinking that by the time they are big enough to fly/jump up the 17 inches they will be too big to fit through the slots! The slots are approx. 1 1/2 inches apart.

Will this be good? (i will take a pic next time down!)

I think it depends on the type. I had baby Serama chicks that could fly that high. If you look real close you can see the baby chick peaking out from under the hen. The roost was about 24 inches high.

When all mine were under 4 weeks they didn't really try

Then at 4 weeks and beyond big flutters

Last night..2'month old serema..flew all the way up to my second story banister..shocked and scared the crap out of me

Cause it hit the banister hard and then..dropped to the ground

But seems all fine

Could you put some chicken wire across the top of where the chicks are at that way if they do try to get out they won't be able too?

My three week old chicks can fly up to three feet high. High enough to perch on their outdoor pen

I found one of my 12 day old chicks standing on the floor outside his cardboard box brooder the other day. The sides are nearly 2' tall and the tallest perch inside is maybe 4" off the ground. Time to get the lid on I think!

I have some sussex chicks in the brooder right now, and they were just a week old when I started finding some of them perched 18 inches up on the side of the brooder - had to pull out the cover.

ugh well then it is settled. I will have to put some hardware cloth around the top of it........that will be mondays project.....

Thanks everyone!!!
