Hi, I wasn't quite sure what to title this post. I usually prefer doing a lot of research and only ask if I'm having a hard time deciding or can't figure something out.

But my rooster died around noon. Very very sudden, perfectly fine and no signs of any issues. I think it was just one of those sudden things. I'm really sad about losing him. He was a good boy. I know he's been mating the hens and I wasn't prepared to hatch any chicks until probably next spring since we plan on moving this year. But with his loss and some very likely fertilized eggs in the nests, I want to try to hatch them while I can.

How do I store these eggs? I'm going to do some research but I want to make sure I keep these incubated eggs safe and I am looking for a decently priced incubator. Also, is it okay if they're a bit dirty? It rained yesterday and stormed last night; a tarp got pulled back so their run got muddy. Everyone is picking up mud on their feet on their way into the coop so... dirty eggs.

Do they only keep for about a week? Is 55-60F the right temp to store them? My fridge would likely be too cold then... Is Nurture right 360 still considered the best "cheap" option? Are there cheaper ones I can get?

Thanks for the help. I really should just be looking into this myself and I will, but I still need to bury him and calm down. And I feel like I need to act fast if I want to get a few babies from him.

yes, but try and clean off any really dirty ones!

usually 1-2 weeks

I personally do about 70

MORE INFO:

hen will keep laying eggs for 2-3 weeks after the rooster is gone. this is because they keep sperm inside them.

and that!

@Noraaaaa Oh thank you so so much! I can't express enough how grateful I am for the info. I have 14 eggs. I know for a fact he regularly mates my Speckled Sussex (the only hen of his breed) and my RIR hen. So I have 4 eggs from them, 2 today and 2 from yesterday on the counter. The others I'm unsure when he last mated them. They usually give him quite a run around.

But if they'll still be laying fertile eggs for a bit longer, I'll definitely make sure to snag up the ones from his favorite hens (especially the Speckled). I think the 22 eggs limit of the Nurture right would be fine for me.
