Hello,
I have four 9-week old chicks I’m integrating into a flock of 6 1-year-olds (including 1 rooster). We built a separate compartment for the chicks so that they could be in the run but separated. For the past week, we’ve been putting them out during the day and bringing them in at night. The adults range most of the day.
1. How long do the chicks need to be in the run before they know that’s home for them and it’s safe to let them range?
2. Do the chicks need some time to have the run of the whole run by themselves in order for them to know its home? Like, should we keep the adults out and let the chicks be in the run by themselves for a period?
We plan to keep with this method for another week or two. Our next step is to open the compartment for the chicks so that they can middle with the adults while still having a safe place to escape to, but I don’t want to deal with having to catch the chicks and put them up before we open the door to let the adults range.
I included pictures for reference. The coop is the metal shed to the left.
