hi I have ten chickens one rooster nine hens and I would like to have some ducks I want one but I can get two how many do I have to get and can any one give me any tips on how to raise them with chickens thanks so much I really appreciated it

This sounds like a math question. LET me help you out, 2. You should get 2 ducks ...no wait 4. Hmmm better yet 10. Yes 10 ducks. :gig
Seriously though, ducks are companion birds and need at least one of their own kind.
If you end up with a drake and duck hen, you should really have at least 3 duck hens to one drake. If it is just two duck hens, you should be fine.
As well, if you end up with a drake and do not have the right ratio. Keep him separate from your chickens because he could try to mate with them which would be disastrous.

Hello, in my experience having Ducks and Chickens in the same pen doesn't work...You will want no less than 3 Ducks. If you get a Drake he could kill a Chicken if he breeds it..Ducks are messy with water...
Thanks for your help yes I think I might need 10 or maybe more lol :lau yes I don’t want to get a drake I don’t want him mating with my chickens thanks for your help :frow

Your welcome..All you can do is try. I have Call Ducks and Big Orpington Hens and a Huge Brahma Rooster..My Calls absolutely hate the Chickens so I have a mesh fence up to keep them separated as they forage. If a Chicken happens to get loose..My Calls chase the Chicken..
Best wishes...

This is true, I don't own large ducks though so it hasn't happened to me.
If you get bantam ducks like Calls, then they won't mount the (chicken) hens. Ours safely run around with our chickens. They still boss around even the leading Buckeye and the most aggressive d'Anver even though they are much smaller. In my experience these ducks don't deal with any chickens that get out of their way. They just are a little part of their closed-in duck life. Never has a Call of ours injured a chicken.
Our Call drake can handle one hen, but right now he has three and (two are broody and expecting the eggs to hatch any day now!:fl)
And yes, they make the worst mud puddles.

This probably could happen. However, mine have never injured them. They probably don't mind my chickens so much because they have lived with the chickens for a year now. And they realized that chickens have boring lives with no concern of theirs. (This is the ducks, not me.)

I had a Huge Chicken land on my one young Call Hen and injured her neck in the commotion of the others chasing the Chickens. She healed though..That's her in my avatar.

How much property you working with? You got a pond or lake in your backyard? The question shouldnt be how many ducks can you haveh, it's more how many ducks can you support on your homestead!!
