Hi everyone!

I've got a mottled bantam cochin who just laid her first egg last Wednesday. From all my reading about cochins and the heat (we live in the Phoenix area) I was expecting MAYBE 2 eggs per week from our little hen. Well, in 7 days she's laid 5 eggs already!

I thought new layers were slow to start? Should I be concerned?

Well the eggs seem normal. All about the same small size (since she's a bantam), light brown and hard shell. I guess we should be thankful, but in all honesty, we pretty much got chickens for pest control as we don't eat that many eggs!

We haven't even cracked open the first one.

But it's good to know she's okay. She was the only pullet we got when we hatched our five eggs, all the rest are cockerels!!

Thanks for the info! I learn so much here!!!

I would say you can expect 1 egg a day until they go broody. I had 3 Cochin Bantam Hens and they were laying machines and then they all three climbed into one next box and were broody together. I did not give them eggs to hatch and they went on like that for over 1 month. I then decided to sell all of my Cochin Bantams.
