I don't have goats but would like to get 2-3 one day. I was just wondering how many gallons of water ONE goat drinks a day.

Hmmm, I have 5 Nigerians and they drink about 6 gallons a day during the summer. So I guess 1 dwarf goat drinks a little over a gallon a day. Not sure about a large, full size goat.

The answer varies widely depending on the weather, what the goat is eating and if it's a milking dairy goat or not. My three boer cross does, non-milking, on pasture/hay drink 8 to 10 gallons between them in hot weather, a lot less in cold weather.

A goat that is fresh will drink about twice what she drinks when she is dry. I have an 15 gallon tank for my little herd, right now I have two fresh does, two dry does, and two ten week old kids and they pretty well empty the tank every day.

that a good question and love these answers .
I too an looking to add a couple of pygmy goats to my mini farm and was also wondering about feeding them .
I know they need fresh hay and if they can have fresh green grass is good , but what else do they need to eat - I know of oats but what kind and say if I have a few sheep with the goats do the eat the same kind of feed and how much of each feed per each (like meat X-Rock chickens will eat 2 lbs of feed per bird per day ) they will eat more but thats what they say to feed daily ...........

so what about pygmy goats or mini sheep how much hay and/ oats and what ever else the may need .............per anaimal

Thanks

Umm, is it just that wet out here? Because of our 7 goats and 60 some chickens who all have the same waterers, we only lose about 15 gallons a day. . . Maybe our goats get most of their water from wet plants?

DaKid-goats eat differently than sheep, especially on pasture. Sheep are grazers and goats are browsers, which means sheep will eat the grass, but the goats will go for the weeds, bushes, etc. Mine seem to especially love anything with THORNS! When it comes to grain, the goats needs are again different. The goats need copper in their diet, which most breeds of sheep cannot tolerate. Some of your older heritage breeds of sheep like Shetlands can handle some copper, but they still should not have as much as what the goats will need. I don't keep sheep anymore, so what I give my goats is a sweet feed for horses, who also need copper. Sheep and goats do make excellent pasture mates because of the different ways they eat, so if you have a place where you can grain them separately you will be fine. If you have really good pasture, they probably won't need any grain unless they are pregnant or lactating though.

Illia-part of the reason I have to refill my goat's water tank every day is because if it gets the slightest bit of dirt in it they won't drink it! I tried to give them a mineral supplement in their water the day before yesterday. They went almost 36 hours without touching their water because it was different than normal!! You know the saying "Stubborn as an old goat"? Yeah.
