My chickens are a year old next month....last year I did not have flies but this year they are bad. I guess they are flies...they aren't household flies or horse flies...they are small, like an oversized gnat. They are in coop. I put out a fly trap that you add water to that I bought from Tractor Supply, but after a few days, I don't see anything in it. My chickens are free range from 7:30 am til dusk...so they aren't in the coop with the flies very much, but how do I get rid of them? Help!

Fly paper at your local tractor supply is does the trick. Be sure to put it up on the walls so the chickens don’t get stuck on it. My hens love picking flys off the fly paper. Also try cleaning out your coop. I know it in more humid places here in Texas even the house can get flys, but cleaning the coop can’t hurt nothing.

How often should I clean it. I cleaned it around Easter, totally cleaned it out. I use wood chips and try to keep things stirred up. I guess I am doing deep litter...my husband said just to throw another bag of chips in and stir it up, but should I just clean it all out again? Thanks

Oh...and thanks for telling me about the fly paper. That is what I wanted to get the other day but couldn't find it... kinda glad I didn't get it because I wouldn't have thought about the hens pecking flies off of it and getting stuck...good to know! Thanks.

I hear your misery's! I've and chickens for the last 5 years in a urban situation ( only can have 4). But from those 4 chickens the flies have always been out of control every year. You name it I've tried it, any fly control method, strips, fly traps , de, cleaning several times a day, different bedding material, everything, oh and all the vanilla car fresheners, yeah those don't work either. So this year, knock on wood, I've completely decided to try just keeping the flies from getting in the first place. I enclosed my chicken coop with garden shade material, you could use screen, but I found this to be cheeper and my God I have no flies and no fly traps needed in my yard, yes I am cleaning it still a a daily basis, but I think I've finally cracked the case:)

Never had a fly problem in the coop. We scoop often and have DE and stall dry as the flooring in our coop. Moisture and poo control is the problem. No flies in the run either as we practice deep mulch method and it is a dry run.

Flies on the large livestock is another issue.
