How to store whipped cream/whipping cream?

I bought a pint of organic heavy whipping cream. I like to whip up the real stuff for topping pies.

Today I baked just one pumpkin pie, and would like to whip up just a cup of this whipping cream to top it.

How should I store the remaining cup of cream once I've opened the carton?

Should I freeze it as is, and thaw & whip it at a later date?
Or should I whip the entire pint and stash half in the freezer?

I'd like to save $$$, and also calories, by not using the entire pint at this time. Thank you for your input!
 
Well, I went ahead and whipped only one cup of the cream, it was more than enough to cover just one pie. I stuck the pint carton in the freezer with the remaining cup of cream in it. I hope it will work to thaw it in the refrigerator at a later date and whip it then. Let me know if you have any better recommendations, thank you.
