Hi,
Does anyone know if your allowed to own chickens in Howell NJ (Residential 3 zone R-3)? If so is their a limit on how many ?

go to your townships website...click on code book...type 188 in the quick search field upper right...first result, click on land use...open 188a Schedule I...looks like 'agriculture' is permitted in your r3 zone... Best thing is to call your zoning office in your township..good luck

Spoke to the Howell Twp Land Use Office today. Chickens are permitted in residential zone R-3. No limit on how many you can own. The only ordinance that affects that zone is your coop must be a minimum of 75 feet from any property line. I will be building my coop this weekend. Very excited !!!!!! Thanks for your help New Chicken Lad.

Hey jerseyboy... congrats on chickens being permitted in your town!!! i'm a northern 'jerseygirl' (yes female, user name should be new chicken lady, made a typo on registration, anyway...) in a very rural area, and technically my girls are illegal cause in my town you need at least an acre (can have up to 32 chickens) but I only have 1/3 acre?!? Whatever, I have 4 hens, an awesome coop built and stained to match my home. My closest neighbors on each side and across the street love my girls, they even come to visit them...

Again, best of luck --> study this site and you will learn everything you need to know. I did..
