I went to check on my broody hen and her eggs. When I was looking at her I noticed her comb and wattle were very pale. Upon inspection I found she is infested with Northern fowl mites. She also has a ball of dry poo that is between the size of a golf ball so she'll need soaked. I'll also need to at least do a neem oil treatment on the coop for now. There were at least 20 mites on every egg. Does anyone have any experience in working so much with a chicken without breaking the brood? What did you do that worked? Also, does anyone have experience with different types of mite killers to know if elector psp is worth the price? I am running on a super tight buget but if rather pay a bit more now if I'll end up paying less in the long run with less re-treating. Thank you very much for reading and or responding.

I would remove and destroy the eggs and strip out the nest and deal with the mite problem if it is Northern Fowl mite. They live on the chicken and will weaken a broody hen quickly.
I think you'll have to give up on this sit and hatch and try again another time.

I had a session with Northern Fowl mites. I used Permethrin spray for 3 successive weekly cycles, worked very well. Permethrin kills on contact with live mites but does not kill mite's eggs hence the 3 cycles.

Northern Fowl mites can live off the bird for up to 3 weeks I believe so a thorough cleaning of nests and coop followed by a thorough spray with Permethrin.

I also use Sulphur power in the dust baths and in a lingerie wash bag hung over the pop door as a maintenance practice.

Lots of work, best of luck.

I would say elector psp definitely worth the price. I always mix 2 gallon in a 5 gal bucket. Wash each bird in it. Then filter the mix out and use it to spray their coop and run. Worked really well. Don't see any mite for several months. Unfortunately, I have lots of wild birds always bought the mites back though. Another option is to buy Permethrin 10 from tractor supply to make the bath mix. Much cheaper, but you have to do it at least twice in 10 days.

For the broody, you can used some poultry dust to dust her and the nest for now. The Permethrin dust can only have the infection under control, but never get rid of the mites for me. You can also use ivermectin pour on for the broody.

I have an incubator. I was kinda thinking make sure all the mites are off of them then using the incubator while I burn spray and dip. Afterwards maybe put dummy eggs back in and see if she sits on them. Worst case scenario I would have to raise them.

Well considering 8 ounces is like over 100.00 how much elector to water. Thank you.

My experience with a broody hen is that nothing will break a broody hen once she starts brooding-no matter how hard I try. I actually don't think that will be a problem for you.

She actually broke her brood at the first treatment. Her eggs are literally still hatching right now. I put them in my incubator.
