Hello!
I've always wanted to get bantams. Specifically cochin bantams.
I've read many good things about bantams, that they are nice, like to cuddle, and other good things.
However- I've never had bantams before.
I've only ever had standard-sized. I don't have any experience with bantams.
So I've been trying to convince my family to get some.
They have the impression that since bantams are small, that they are skittish and fast:confused: Just like some tiny dogs are. Well, only one of my family members are convinced but not the rest.
I've done so much research and gave them evidence that bantams are super friendly and there's mostly only good things about them! Yet, they still want to stick with the standards.
And hey, I love standard-sized chickens!! But I want to have a more diverse flock... Big chickens and tiny chickens.
Have you ever watched the YouTube channel Chickenlandia? Yeah. Exactly like that. But they will be in separate coops.
I currently have an empty 13 ft long, about 9 ft wide, and about 7-8 feet high chicken tractor. We've already decided that we want 2 standards to go in there (we are going to get 2 chicks from a local breeder.) But if I get bantams that's where they will be going as well.

So, here's my questions.
1. Is it okay to mix standards with bantams?
2. How many will be able to fit in my chicken tractor?
3. What breed do you suggest? I'm almost positive I want cochin bantams, but do you have any favorites?
4. Is their care/needs basically the same as standard-sized breeds? Easier? More difficult?

So, please convince them to cave in to getting bantams!😆

Thanks so much!

Bantam cochins are my favorite breed of chickens. They can be friendly if handled when younger. They lay decently, but will go broody often, so be prepared for that. Most bantams will go broody.

Bantam cochins are a larger bantam and stand up well with other standard breeds that are gentle. They can be bullied by more vigorous breed. They also are not good at flying so they won't be flying out of the pen like other bantam breeds. You will need to make sure they can get into the nest boxes and the roosts shouldn't be too high.

If I could only keep one breed it would be bantam cochins.

The roosts in the chicken tractor are about 2-3 off of the bottom of the coop. Is that okay? how many will be able to fit after 2 standards go in there? (p.s. the pool from our old duck is out of there now)

In that sort of set up I'd personally skip the standard breeds and just put some cochins in it. They do better under confinement. Not sure what the overall size of this coop and run is so it's hard to give any recommendations.

If I go off the two chickens to the left of the set up I'd recommend 3 standards, or 6 bantams.

#1 Yes, I have Silkies, Australorps, Easter Eggers, Frizzles, Bantam Polish, Ayam Cemani, Serama and more all together lol! They all love each other and I've never worried about them hurting one another.
#2 I don't know.
#3 It's your decision, everyone is different.
#4 I think they're easier to catch (at least the Silkies), eat less food, roost just as well as standards (although each breed is different.
I think it's basically like a standard but packed in a smaller size.
They go broody ALOT and I personally LOVE that.

P.s love the Welcome to Chickenlandia reference :D

In short I think showing them some pictures of cute bantams would convince a lot of people ;D
Or looking at one of Dalia's latest videos with Pickles the bantam on her shoulder would too.

Oh and did the standards and bantams have to grow up together as chicks in order for them to be nice to each other????

No, most of them were adults when I got them. I did raise the Ayams, EEs' and some silkies but the rest I bought as pullets and adults and they're all really nice to each other. They are all so cute!!!

Lol I live in Canada and it was -40*C last year and I brought Noodle (the frizzle) the Seramas, silkies and older girls indoors since the wind made it -50*C. The video is called How to Grow GRASS in your Chicken yard, it was posted 4 weeks ago :D
