these aren't the actual ones just what they look like!

Marans don't always lay super dark eggs, but they should, they have the ability sometimes, but not very Marans hen will lay super dark eggs...I feel like sometimes birds have been crossed somewhere at some time so things go awry, or a chick hatched that laid light eggs and I stead of culling the person fired light eggs were better than no eggs...it's hard to breed for a certain trait. I mean it can be emotionally hard. I couldn't ever dispatch a chicken because it didn't have this trait or that

Is she from a hatchery? I doubt you'll find a hatchery Marans that will produce a chocolate colored egg. They do not focus on things such as egg color.

I have had my Maran Gerty for years and she never once gave me a dark brown egg. In fact sometimes they were lighter than those my plain old PRs laid!!!!!!

Oes - nothing to be scared about just love her anyway! Here is my old gerty - no dark eggs at all ever!

What colour are her legs?????? Lol - someone once tried to sell me a barred rock telling me it was a baby Marans lol - he was not happy when I told him he could keep his barred rock and I would take the Marans he did have the one with the PINK LEGS! Still that one is my sons hen "crazy legs" and she doesn;t lay dark eggs either - just plain old borring light brown ones any common PR can lay! - Darn!

As I understand it, the Marans was just recently accepted as a breed. To actually BE a Marans, I believe the egg it lays must be a 6 or 7 on a scale of 10, as best I remember.

If the bird cannot do this, it isn't a Marans. It's just a speckled, cuckoo bird. My guess, and only a guess. is that given the popularity or novelty of a new breed, there are far too many people selling birds as Marans that simply are not up to snuff, either in appearance nor egg laying. What else is new, I guess.

Just stuff you hear hanging around here. More experienced breeders of true Marans would certainly know better.
