I'm Seeing Tiger Stripes

I'll try to get my husband to help me take a picture later, but I collected eggs fore the incubator over my Christmas break and between January 21st and 24th we hatched out 25 backyard mix chicks. Dad is one of my two Buff Orps. I have four BO hens, and four backyard mixed (I have to assume derived from an EE Tractor Supply purchase). One of my brown chicks is starting to show yellow striping. One of the hens looks like a barred rock. Wish I could tell from the striping if they'll grow up laying eggs or going in the freezer. They're mostly dark with light yellow stripes just beginning to show. When my husband gets home from work, I'll try to get a picture. I'd take pics of all of the babies, but they're about three weeks old and the brooder gets cleaned regularly, but it gets very non-picture-worthy very quickly. 🙃

If any chicks are barred and your roosters are Buff Orpingtons, then the barring came from the hens. If you have barred chicks, hens only pass barring to the male offspring. Since hens have ZW chromosomes and roosters ZZ and barring is carried on the Z, hens have one copy. Males get a copy of the Z from each parent while females only get it from the fathers. This means every barred offspring is a cockerel since it indicates it received the Z from the mother. :)

Well, that's good in a way. Husband came home and just grabbed the five brown chickens randomly for pictures. They weren't having it, the pictures aren't good enough for identifying anything and they just started running around the house. X-)

They're all pretty cute for funky chickens.

Non of these chicks are barred, they are all partially patterned or black with heavy red/buff leakage.

You probably already know, but the chick in picture 14 is definitely a cockerel (red wattles!, large comb).
Good. Have a friend that's looking for pullets this spring and he'll probably want a roo as well. I'll offer some of the BO pullets and one of these multicolored roos. They're just too interesting to look at to turn them into broth/freezer chickens. :)

He's willing to barter some auto knowledge/repair time for some free chicks. Good deal for me. I'm on school break again this week and I can start filling an incubator again. After this round, I'll just leave the chick hatching to my girls. Going to concentrate on incubating green eggs and eggs for my pink layer. If I sell eggs, coworkers are really impressed with a multi-colored dozen. I work in a school. :)
