A 4 day old cornish cross arrived yesterday from large commercial hatchery. Today one was found lethargic and on inspection had a pasty butt- like bottom. Cleaning him there was a very foul odor and pus from umbilical site.:sick It was oozing out while I held the chick—Belly was boggy and larger than I would expect. Chick was euthanized and coop sanitized afterward. Yesterday all were as active as any chick just shipped.
All remaining chicks look great, zooming everywhere.
Internet search places salmonella or E-Coli as highly probable- Is there any reason to worry about the others getting ill?

Any thoughts on when the infection began? In egg, incubator or transit? Transit time was 2 days.
TIA

In-egg is highly unlikely so it would have to be from the point it hatched to when it was shipped and that's anyone's guess.

I personally would use Odoban spray or we buy a gallon jug of that and make a sprayer mix from it. That kills everything known to man including Marek's disease which most sanitizers don't. It's safe once dry and used in hatcheries and hospitals, but probably not by this hatchery!!

I'd also give the rest some vitamin water like Nutradrench or Poultry Cell and some probiotics like Hydro-Hen. Thus in case they have any bad bacteria or germs in them, that'll help.

I have never heard of this so hopefully it's just a fluke. Sorry!!

Thank you for the information. I took your advice and added nutradrench and electrolytes in a gal of water for the whole batch. They all look great today-

I ordered CX from this hatchery last year- had several with leg issues from the get go; now this. Never ordering from there again-

Thank you so much for your help. I’ll look into Odoban for future needs, too.
