Injectable Penicillin Dose

My chicken vet gave me 1.25 ml injectable for a 4 lb chicken, to be adminiistered intra-muscular.

5 days consecutively - my hen Kalani had gotten poisoned with something unknown and the vet just wanted her to have the penicillin just in case, because we didn't know what the toxin was. She recovered completely, and the vet gave me an extra 5 syringes, in case another incident like that happened.
Thanks for the info! Any chance you could contact your vet and ask if the penicillin was the 300,000 IU/ml stuff?

I have always read where procaine penicillin G (300,000 units per ml ) was given for 4-5 days in chickens. Dosage of 0.1 ml is sufficient for animals up to 100 pounds, but I usually recommend 0.25 ml for chickens. Here is an article by Natalie Ross that has been around for a number of years where 0.25 or 1/4 ml for 4 days was recommended:

Also in the last paragraphin post 2 is where N.Ross discusses dosages in other animals and chickens:

Many on BYC use 0.5 ml, but it may be too much. Procainamide (procaine) needs to be used with caution in birds and poultry.

I noticed that Plumbs Veterinary Handbook does not mention chickens, but recommends procaine penicillin G/benzathine, which is a long-acting version that lasts for 2 days, for turkeys. It says to use procaine pen G with caution in small birds. They recommend 50 mg per pound, which totally confuses things, since it is in units, not mg.

They (Plumbs) recommend 10,000 units per pound of procaine pen G in small animals, rabbits, and rodents. Check my math, but that equals 0.03 ml per pound, right?

So I would probably use the smallest amount in a chicken, possibly 0.1 ml daily for 4-5 days.
