Hello,
One of our hens has started kicking one of her back legs out when walking. She doesn’t hold it up or limp but when she walks the kicks it back, very odd. We inspected her feet for injuries and bumbles and didn’t find anything other than one of her toes is very enlarged, see attached photos. The toe isn’t warm, it feel hard, so I don’t think it’s infected, I’m wondering if it’s just a deformity that we haven’t noticed. Has anyone experienced a chicken that kicked her leg out?! She’s probably 3 years old. Thanks so much

It doesn’t appear to be gout which affects both feet, but it looks like she has injured or broken the toe in the past. It may be arthritic. My old rooster used raise his legs or kick out sometimes when his arthritis was bothering him in later years. Vets can prescribe something like Rimadyl or Meloxicam for her, but those are prescription only. Aspirin 81 mg or half of one might work for 2-3 days, but should not be used more than that due to a possibility of GI bleeding.
