Hi All,
I stumbled upon this site in my Google searches.
I found a rooster standing on my road with a bloody head (dried up) and a right eye swollen and shut. His left eye looks a bit glazed.
I was going to drop off my son at school and do something in town, and when I came back the rooster was in the exact same spot. I went to him and he didn't run at first, but he did a few min later (it could be his hearing is also compromised) and he was running into everything. I think he is blind in this one, possibly in both eyes.
The day before, I did see two roosters fighting in this same area, so I assume this is a result of that fight.
I have him in a safe, small fenced in area on my property. He just stands there. I've tried to give him water, fruits, oatmeal and he won't eat or drink. I cleaned his head (but it's very dry) with chlorhexidine and my local pharmacist told me I could put Bacitracin on him, so I did (but not inside the eye)
I picked him up on Tuesday morning and it's Thursday morning. Just checked on him and still just standing there. What else can I do to help this poor animal, if anything? I've never seen an animal just stand there for hours and hours without eating, moving, anything. Any advice appreciated, especially on the most compassionate, humane thing.
If you've been to Kauai, you know we have tons of feral chickens. This is not something I've done before, but I had to do something!
Mahalo,
Courtney
