I’m not sure how else to explain this — my twelve year old hen (who now lives in the house with us) has been clearly irritated by something in and/or around her beak. She’s been inside for nearly a year, super active, eats well, etc.
I’ve tried to look and see if theres anything there to bother her but haven’t been able to see much of anything there. I don’t want to attempt rinsing anything near her beak because I’m afraid she’ll aspirate the water and I’ll have a whole new problem.
A few minutes ago she was aggressively scratching at her beak and must’ve caught INSIDE her beak and what appears to be the inner lining of her upper beak popped OUT?! Like…a thin lining that was still slightly attached to the inside of her beak…?? (EDIT: I think it might’ve been her LOWER beak, not upper — I’m realizing that it looks like the BOTTOM part inside her mouth)
I’ve never seen this before, I don’t even know where to start with googling it — has anyone EVER seen anything like this?? Is this an emergency vet sort of scenario?? I don’t want to go prying her mouth open and injuring her more — I’m not sure what to do. She doesn’t currently seem bothered — she’s roosting in our living room, just sort of hanging out as usual, but of course I’m freaking out.
Thoughts????
