Hi,
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
When I was a kid I grew up on a farm/ranch with my grandparents. My grandparents raised cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys. My wife last year decided she wanted a backyard flock and some goats. We started our backyard chicks this year in February and added on in March.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
16 chickens, 4 turkeys, 4 ducks, and 3 feinting goats
(3) What breeds do you have?
4 Rhode island reds, 4 Leg horns, 4 Sextons, 4 Australorps (2 of the Rhodes are young males, rest are hens)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love the whole aspect, just now getting eggs. I find it really awesome that the kids are getting a kick out of it and learning things that will go a long way when they get older. It also brings back many great childhood memories for me and making new family memories. I know hate store bought eggs
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My family enjoys hiking, fishing, and hunting. Just generally anything outside. We also enjoy growing a garden every year and canning and freezing. I also enjoy working on cars/trucks and my wife likes her crafting.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My wife and I have 4 kids, the youngest is my daughter and she graduated from high school this year. I am an electrician and my wife works at local eye doctors office and we have lived in Northern Nevada for the last 28 years. We also have 3 outdoor dogs, 2 indoor cats, and a fish aquarium inside.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I googled for information on how to keep goats out of chicken feed and was led to this community. I decided to join because this seems like a really awesome site that has members that are genuine and real and offer great advice. Hopefully I can help also, but looking forward to getting great advice from others.
Happy to meet everyone,
Joe H
