I have a group of 7 mixed pullets about 8 weeks old. I have just agreed to pick up a 6 week old Orpington cockeral to add in. Wondering how to go about it. I have the girls in a “brooder” under the poop shelf in my hen house. I have 4 full grown hens. I was wondering how to introduce the one little man to the 7 pullets.

Option one: stick him in and watch what happens. (I would probably try this, because when it does work it is by far the easiest way. If it doesn't work, pull him out and go to the next option.)

Option two: provide a space next to the pullets and hens so he can see and interact but no-one can actually pick on him directly. After a few days or a week or so, put a pullet in with him. Wait a day or two, then add about two more pullets. Wait another day or two, combine both groups (cockerel & pullets with remaining pullets.)

Each time you combine birds, watch to be sure that none get badly injured. It is fine if they run around, ruffle feathers, stare at each other, jump around, etc.

Thanks so much. I never thought about adding a few at a time. 😀 Fingers crossed crossed he just fits right in.

:fl

It can be hard to add just one chicken to a group. But a "group" can be broken up into smaller groups or single individuals if needed ;)
