hello I am new to this site and a fairly new chicken owner. I have a few RIR chickens but recently was introduced/addicted to silkies. I live in the city and cannot have roosters, plus I have a neighbor who hates all noise. apparently my chickens singing the "I laid an egg come look mom" song for 10 minutes a day outweighs the kids yelling all afternoon around the neighborhood.anyways, I have a shy lone silkie hen named Faye who is about 10 months now that I purchased from a local breeder the same day I got my other RIR hens.I keep her in her own coop by herself so she won't get beat up. She usually follows me or the dogs around the yard clucking but over the past few months has looked a little sad and I thought it would be a good idea to get her a chicken buddy vs. German shepherd or human buddy. So I found a college kid who loves the breed and breeds them as a hobby. I went and picked one out that we thought was female but now I question it. He/She clucks just like Faye, but has both male/female characteristics. please help! The new ones name is Savannah and is 5
400
months now.

Cute Silkie!

I am not a Silkie expert. So you might want to post this question with pics in our What Gender section here on BYC for a good ID...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

And you can also chat with other Silkie owners in this thread. Lots of active Silkie talk here....

Make sure to keep the hair trimmed out of the eyes of Silkies so they can see to eat and drink. This hair can cause issues.

Welcome to our flock!

Really need the crest pulled back so we can see the comb on your new silkie. At this age it won't be long till is crows or lays an egg and then you will know for sure. I think everybody has a neighbor like yours- always huffing and puffing about something. If I had to guess I would say pullet, her posture isn't like a males.

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! Glad to have you here! Right now, it looks like a hen.
