I bought five chicks (supposedly all female) from a hatchery now almost six weeks old but I am starting to wondering if the Bantam Easter Egger in particular might be a cockerel. Her(his?) comb was getting reddish at five weeks already and she often jumps on and chest bumps the others despite her size. Help! Here are pictures of her at five weeks and a few days.

Cockerel. EE pullets just don't get a red comb like that this early. Also, if you take a look at it, it's wide with three rows of peas. Finally, his coloring is patchy like a patchwork quilt with large solid blocks of color on the shoulders, classic cockerel coloring.

I'm not 100% sure with this one, so give him some time, but I'd say 80% that's a boy.

I agree

at a glance it looked pullet-ish but then the areas on wings, back and neck are kind of looking darker than rest of body.. often a sign of the earliest roo feathering starting to come in.

Whatever sex, it's a VERY beautiful and rather unusual color for any chicken!

Thanks for your thoughts, folks. I'm really hoping Bunny is a girl, as I won't be able to keep a roo. Here are some better shots a little more recent, a few days shy of 6 weeks. Each member of our family got to name one and this is "my" girl!

Unfortunately that strongly looks like roo coloring coming up in the third pic- the darker red areas. They also are all in the "red roo feather" areas of the wing bow(the 'arm' part) and on shoulder and down by the tail.

There should be pin feathers coming up on the back area soon.. separate the feathers to find them- if the feathers are coming up that same red plus super shiny and pointy that's more roo signs.

Thanks for sharing your expertise! I'm a newbie at the chicken thing and really appreciate it. I will keep an eye out for feather coloring and pin feathers. Keeping my fingers crossed.. Hoping my other four are girls too, pretty sure about three and I have one Silkie which I have read is very hard to tell until much older anyway...
