Thoughts on using Quik Chik and/or chick starter feed? Is it necessary?

Chick starter is not "necessary", no. I am not familiar with chick quick.
I don't feed chick starter - I use an "all flock" feed (specifically, I use Flock Raiser) from the first to last day any bird is in my flock.....any grower type ration works well for this.

I guess Chick Quick is something you put in their water, I'm not sure familiar with it either ;P I googled it and ha! I was spelling it wrong LOL! Here's a link-http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/quik_chik.html

Seeing the edit now - so it's "quik chik" not chick quick? There are a lot of different products similar to that - they are not necessary, and I do not use them.

I have heard of folks using regular food for chicks and putting it through the blender to chop it up smaller for the babies but I chose to utilize a specific starter feed and I think that is what most will recommend.

Chick Quick is not necessary or a requirement but, I look at it like this, the chicks are going to be stressed and if the vitamins and electrolytes help give them a boost to get over the stress at a very fragile time in their lives by using it you are reducing the risks.

Risk management and comes down to the opinion you form from the information you read and finances to some extent but I am confident millions of chicks have survived and thrived without using chick quick / save a chic / etc. I chose to use Save a Chic when we received our girls.

Some sort of chick feed, flock raiser, or all flock feed is needed for proper growth and development. Do not feed birds that are not laying eggs layer pellets. "Scratch" feed is not a complete feed and should never be used as a primary diet. If you choose not to feed medicated chick starter, be sure to have medication on hand to treat coccidia.

I should also add that my chicks won't be shipped from anywhere, my hens are setting :D I don't know if that makes a difference since it's seems the concern is dehydration from shipping?
