Is there a quiet Peacock breed to keep in a backyard?

I was thinking of getting a pair of peacocks (male and female) and was wondering if they are loud? We have neighbors close by on each side of our house and some behind. So, I dont want to get any if they are loud. Never had any before, so was wondering if they had a quieter breed?

Hi! You mean peafowl, right? Peacocks are males, peahens are female.. (And when your classifying males and females, they’re called peafowl, or when they have not yet been sexed, are also peafowl.)

Anyway, the males are generally louder than the females. Neighbors have been known to complain for the call of the peacock.

I’ve heard peahens make much less noise, so maybe peahens are best suited for you..?

Edit: I also do not believe that there is a quieter breed of peafowl.. I believe their characteristics are all the same, just different colors..

Peacocks do make funny noises though, it's like a woman saying 'help!' 'help!'
I don't have peafowl but I've heard other people's. They always crack me up!

Peacock's cry can travel a long distance. And yes they do annoy people very fast. There used to be one that lived about a quarter a mile away, and we could hear it clearly. Having just a peahen would kinda defeat the purpose, since the peacock is the prettiest with the huge tail.

Peafowl males (peacocks) make a lot of noise **during the breeding season** and not all the time. Generally that would be spring. Unfortunately peafowl can not read, and have not read about when they should be breeding, so you sometimes hear a peacock crying out of season... but mostly this is in the spring and summer. It's quite loud. Birds sing, or make noise, to defend territory. it's the peacock's way to let other peacocks know that this is his territory and he will defend it.

They are impressively loud. The other thing you should know is that unless you have them confined to an aviary, peafowl will range in a circle of roughly 5 miles. That means that for 2.5 miles and 360 degrees from your house, which would presumably be the home range, they would be flying there, crapping on people's vehicles, doing their territorial calls and generally annoying people. If you want to keep peafowl, I would highly recommend that FIRST you build an aviary. A really, really big one. And yes, it will have to have a top to it. They can fly very high and think nothing of flying up 30' in the air into a tree to roost for the night.

Peafowl are magnificent birds but unless you live way out in the country or have a really good aviary, I can't recommend them for a neighborhood. I live way out in the country, had an aviary, and STILL got complaints about how loud my peacock was... from someone who lived two miles away. Good luck!

What about Peacock Pheasants? The are a type of Pheasant that the males fan their tails like a Peacock. I would imagine those are quieter than the actual thing, and similar, so maybe that's the way to go if you are allowed to have pheasants. Have a great day and God Bless!!!

Hello ckus, I am no expert. My husband did alot of research before getting our first peas. Our peas, peacock and peahen are quiet, they are Java blues or Java greens. I guess I need to call the seller and ask. But, do some internet research and that will help also. I actually didn't know how loud they were until I watched videos on utube. Btw, during mating season they are louder...April to August. Good luck!
