This chick is supposedly a Sagitta but curious what you guys think. I don’t have experience with breed but the markings don’t seem like a match. Any thoughts?

Tractor supply. We have been keeping hens for a few years but we always bought them from local farms as full grown hens. My daughter really wanted chicks this year since she has been doing most of the hen keeping work. She has been researching and we can’t seem to find Sagitta chicks or hens with similar markings.

Lots of chickens; RIR, Speckled Sussex, Buckeye, NH Red... They all have this type of feather pattern for the first set. Since this cross includes RIR and NH Red, I'm not surprised that they also have that pattern.

Thanks! So the the black markings on these early feathers might not necessarily be present on her feathers as she grows into a full grown hen?

Thank you!
Lauren,

I believe your chick may have come from Valley Farms. Are you in the South? Their "Sagitta" chicks are wildtype in base color as is yours. Hybrids are often sold with similar names but actually share only one parent - see all the different "Ranger" free range broilers.
Your coloration does appear to be different from other "Sagittas". If I had to wager I would bet that Valley Farms hatched it from an egg obtained from Centurion Poultry. If she turns out a deep red her parents might be the male line bird that is used for the standard Sagitta (standard Sagitta on left side of picture) and the Tetra Brown female. If so, this is probably a custom cross for Valley.

Or, I could be completely wrong - but I can say that you don't run into wild type base color that often in hybrids

I hope you keep us updated. I'm thinking of ordering some from Valley myself.
