So Tweetie, my seven month old silkie/barred rock mix, has been acting strange. I thought that maybe she was sick, because she wasn't outside playing with gladys. But then i nothoiced that she was sitting in the nest box, all puffed up. I remember reading that broodys get mean, and will bite, but this girl is afraid of her own shadow, and has never bitten me. So she is just sitting in the nest box, and when i get close, or try to touch her, she screams!!!!

So i rigged a sort of trap. I put two eggs in the box in front of her. I figured if she tucks them under her, she's broody. SO i ut the eggs in front of her, and she just stared at me, them the eggs, then back at me. So i went and got the camera, and put it right in front of her nest box.

Here's the video. (nothing happens for two minutes, she just stares at the eggs, so you can skip to like the 2:00 )

Do you think she's broody?
Do broodys still lay eggs?

she is acting like my white silkie... she takes everyone's eggs and tucks them under her. when i go to collect eggs, she growls at me and gets all puffed up to make her look bigger. I just gave her 3 fertilized eggs.

I think yours is becoming broody. I think they will lay till they feel they are sitting on what they can handle... no more. But I could be wrong.

yah...see those eggs arent fertilized. I'm glad she's not sick....but not really thrilled that she's broody. Looks like just another Chicken adventure!!!

I wasn't able to watch the video until I get home. My biggest test was if the hen was still on the nest overnight. Any other hen would go roost with her buddies, but a broody will sleep on her nest, so go down at night to be sure.

A broody will quit laying eggs once she starts setting, so if she's really broody, she won't start laying again until you either break her broodiness or she hatches and raises her chicks. Mine usually started laying about a month after they hatched their chicks.

This is the first time mine has gone broody... she is a trip to watch. My concern is the next time as I cannot always let her hatch eggs.

(too bad too... I just luv my chickens!!!!) I want more and more and more... but only have a small backyard. Need to move...
