Is weed preventer safe to use around chickens?

Has anyone used weed preventer such as Preen around your chickens? Is it safe if they ingest it? or do they naturally leave it alone? We're in a new house (to us) with lots of flower beds and boarders. I don't have the time or energy to pull all the weeds that I'll be facing if I do nothing. I've used Preen at our old house, but we didn't have chickens there. I never noticed any birds eating it or and dead birds. So is it safe?? I can't risk poisoning our girls which are more our pets than for the eggs they give us. (-:
