Jersey Giants for meat. What age?

howdy there fellow chicken people. We've decided to go with Jersey Giants this year for meat. I'm trying to figure out when to have them come in so that we can have them processed this year. Processing ourselves was a bit much last year.

For those who have raised giants for meat, what age were they and at what weight?

This breed would take about 6-8 months full growth. It is a large bird, but not popular as meat bird.

I raise Jerseys Giants. Never would I count on them to raise for meat chickens. I can't afford the amount of feed it takes to grow them up to good size. By the time they get to 8 mos they have names, personalities and are almost like pets. They grow so slow. They get there height and length first and then start filling out. I love my giants but will be trying to reduce them asap. I pd $50 each for the roo and two hens each. Not made a dime on them. Only ever ate , a rooster I had caponized. People buy hatchery birds and think they are purebred. Around her any way. I will be working the breed out of my flock.

I highly recommend White Bresse. I raise and eaten about 30+ breeds over many years and White Bresse is on top of my list. They are fantastic as dual purpose and you can butch the unwanted rooster 16-18 weeks. The hen of this breed don't or rarely broody so keep that in mind.

Our male BJG work out pretty fare. Never weigh them. But good size @ 5-6 mo.

I did caponize and eat extra roosters for a while. Now I am starting a flock of purebred Cornish so there'll be plenty of meat there. I sold out all Jerseys yesterday except my top four. Reducing number of breeds so I can concentrate more on less.
