Hi All,

A friend of mine and I are looking to start a quail breeding project at our college's farm (we originally planned on chickens, but as quail are ready to reproduce so much earlier we switch to Coturnix quail). We would like to be able to chart an individual's growth so we need some way of marking them at a very young age. I have been using jiffy wing bands with my chickens at home for about 2 years now and have been very happy with how easily they go in and that they don't seem to hinder the bird at all. I usually put them in at a few days old. Does anyone have any experience using jiffy bands on quail? I imagine that the adults are large enough that they are not bothered by wing bands, but they seem way too big to put on quail chicks.
There was a thread on here about a similar topic, from 2013 I believe, that mentioned pidgeon wing bands for quail (which I imagine are lighter but don't seem to be any smaller).
Of course, leg banding (or wing banding) the adults is always an option, but that does not give us a way to chart individual growth.
Does anyone have any suggestions for types of bands or experience with jiffy bands on quail chicks? Any ideas would be appreciated!
