I would like to share our flocks story! Lets start from the very beginning, shall we?
About 6 years ago, we bought our first chicks. We had between 7 and 10 of them.
Months later, our dogs Jasmine, (Chinese shar-pei, 6-8 [years] at this point) and Rimmy (German shorthaired pointer, 1-2 [years] at this point) Killed all of them.
It was a brutal sight, the dead chickens were everywhere! It was a sad day.
Months later, missing the eggs, we got 6-8 more chickens... I don't quite remember what kinds, but i remember we got some Buffy's and some Americana.
This is when I began to love Americana's and chickens in general. (I was 8 or 9) My favorite chicken was Monster, A Americana, who I had picked out. We also had gotten a
second Americana and I named her Lynx. She died in my hands, I thought she was sleeping. I remember the neighbor boy named one of the buffs Pancake...
Another vicious attack by our dogs. They killed 3 or 4 chickens. One happened to be monster. She had ran into the orchards. I found my baby on the other side of the fence, nearly dead with a large gaping hole in her back. She died soon after. I had flash backs of when she had been alive, and she would sit in my lap as I swang on our swings. It was devastating.
We gave Rimmy to a friend, at a place where she could be a bird dog.
Surprise surprise, we got some more chicks! We wanted to try something else and got 5 ducklings as well! You may be thinking, are you crazy? You didn't keep your dog in, or separated? We tried, but she had to go outside, and our chickens wanted to free range. We thought she had been done killing chickens...
Anyways. She ended up killing 3 of the 5 ducks. Other than that, that bunch did good for a long time. Until some died for random reasons, and when we moved, some were given away. We did what we had to.
When we moved, We got a few chicks from a farm store, and 5 RIR from a random old guy. He assured us that they were all Pullets and there was nothing to worry about! Thus we got 5 roosters! We gave 3 to some one and kept 2. One day, the 2 got into a fight. NOTHING would separate them. My dad choose the meanest one and butchered him, not to eat, but because he had the worst injuries. We got 5 more ducks. Waddles, Coffee, Mrs quack, Mr quack, and sunshine. They were all boys except Mrs quack. We expected them to swim in our large pond, but they had other plans. They just wanted to poop on our patio. My grandma tried to find "Duck repellent." Lol
We got more chicks, and this batch was sweet, we lost 3, one mysteriously disappeared, My favorite americana, chubbs got eaten by my dog, again. And one died by being electrocuted in a rainstorm by an electric fence! This is right about the time the raccoon attacks started happening. We lost 6-7 chickens to the raccoons. One night, at like 10 at night, my mom heard the chickens freaking out, A raccoon got in a killed 2 before dad could get to them.
Somewhere along the line we lost more, we got more, We have 17 chickens in my family's flock Here is the list of them:
