Lavender orpington genetics question?

I'm gonna try this...lav roo X black hen = black babies that carry lav gene. You then Lav Roo X black/lav babies and get 50% lav babies and 50 Black babies.

Then lav roo X lav babies = 100 % lav babies

Yes, no, maybe???

Ok with the lavender roo x black hen do you get 100% split blacks or 50% split(carrys Lav gene) and 50% black(does not carry Lav gene)?

you would get split black chicks which would look black but carry the lavender gene, you could breed those babies back with the dad and I think the resulting offsping would be 50% black and 50% lavender. Once you are at the point where you have lavender hens, if you breed lavender to lavender it will breed true.

IFF the black was split for lavender (Lav/lav), half the chicks would be lavender, half black split for lav. If the black is Lav/Lav, then all chicks will be black split for lav.

Yes, lavender X lavender = 100% lavender.

The line breeding answer is to breed the splits back to the lavender parent.

Ummmmm, I think you get 1/2 and 1/2. I can't remember. I know there are folks more knowledgeable about the genetics than me.

I was under the impression that not all the lav roo x black/lav hen would produce carriers. Something like 50 lav /25 black /25 black carrier in that second generation. But I thought that lav roo x black hen would get you 100% carriers for the first generation.

I've got it all written down somewhere I'm sure.....

A lavender bird is lav/lav. All its offspring will receive a copy of lav, and either be lavender or split for it, depending on the other parent's genes.

If you breed two splits (Lav/lav) X (Lav/lav), you will have 25% lavender, 25% without lavender and 50% split. No way to distinguish the splits from the non-carriers.

f you breed a split with a non-carrier (Lav/lav) X (Lav/Lav) you will have 50% carriers and 50% not, but no way to know who is whom.

Thanks everyone I am glad my BYC friends know more about this that me.This is a big help!

So if I would like to have lavender orpingtons....do I have to make sure to have a male or female lavender and keep breeding back until I get the color?? (using my white and buffs?)

Since lavender dilutes both black and red, it is recommended to use a black bird in your crosses to generate a consistent coloring of lavender plumage in the resulting offspring. Lavender cannot dilute white, since white is the absence of color.

For the crosses, it works like this:

lavender X lavender = 100% lavender
lav X black = 100% black carrying the lav gene
black carrying lav X black carrying lav (visually black birds) = 50% black carrying lavender, 25% lavender and 25% straight black
lav X black carrying lav = 50% lav and 50% black carrying lav
