Just got 3 chickens today that I did not know would have leg mites but unfortunately do :( I've dunked all 3 in a bath of baby oil for a couple minutes at a time and I have ivermectin drops on the way. When I get the ivermectin, how should I administer? Orally? On the back of the neck? And when should I re treat? How long till these things are gone? I've never dealt with this before and I'm concerned that my other chickens (I have 9 others) will get it. I'm keeping the ones with the mites in a separate covered dog kennel but they're located in the same garage - will they be ok? Do mites travel this far? I'm freaking out!

Do they just have scaley leg mites or lice/ poultry mites as well?

If they only have the scaley leg mites, the ivermectin should be applied directly to the legs, but if they have mites else where too, then just a few drops on the back of their neck.

I'm not sure if they have lice.. could I treat on the back of the neck to be safe? Will that take care if the leg mites as well?

Can you keep the newbies in a completely different location? Housing them in the same area is not a good quarantine measure.

Tomorrow, I would soak the legs in a warm bath - add some epsom salts, chlorhexidine or betadine to the water - let them soak for a little while, then gently scrub with a soft brush to help loosen that debris. Dry well, then apply your oil of choice.
Repeat.
Ivermectin will treat SLM, but the soaking and oil will help the legs heal (and kill SLM too).
Most of the time Ivermectin is applied topically at the base of the neck along the spine. Dosing is dependent on the product you got. Withdrawal times are debatable, but I would go with at least 14 days after last application of Ivermectin. Here's dosing information: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/mites-lice-now-hen-growling.1242981/page-2#post-19965544

It would be very good to check them for body lice and mites too. Quarantine away from your existing flock and observe for signs of respiratory illness and get a fecal float to check for worms.
