Listless hen with yellow crusty skin in wingpits after Permectrin II treatment

Hello friends, I have 3 barred rocks and a brahma that free range in our little spot in the woods. Our hens were gifted to us in January. We recently discovered a lice infection. We treated the hens and the coop with Permectrin II. We followed the dilution ratios on the Permectrin II bottle to make a solution, then dipped our hens in (for about a minute each), keeping their necks and heads out of the water.

Since then it's been about 8 days, and one of our barred rocks seems lower energy than usual. She's named Wily because she's quick and wary! But lately she's been laying out in the sun, lethargic, almost sleepy-eyed. Her face seems a little pale and there is some peeling skin on her wattle. She feels lighter than she should, and we suspect she's dehydrated/not eating enough. I've only seen her poop once during this time, and it was a pale yellow, runny looking poo. We took a good look at her today and found that her skin under her wings is crusting, peeling, and yellow. It's also happening on other parts of her body - I didn't notice it around her vent, but I did on her breast and elsewhere on her body.

She's the first one we dipped in the Permectrin II solution, and I pulled her out quickly because I realized the water was too hot (not burning but like a hot shower). I poured in some cool water to cool it down to lukewarm, then dipped her again. All the hens after her were dipped in the same solution. None of the other birds are showing any similar symptoms. We repeated the treatment today for all the bird except for her.

She's about a year old, there is no bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. She has been eating layer feed pellets and free-ranging, and she gets the occasional banana/strawberry/kitchen scrap from us (she loves clementines but I'm not sure if it's ok to let her eat them!).

She and our other feather babies free range when we're home. Their coop is inside an enclosed run, and the coop is filled with pine shaving bedding. We hope to treat this ourselves as our budget is limited, but we're willing to go to a vet if needed. We love her!

Do her symptoms look like something that could affect the other chickens? Should we isolate her? How can we help her stay hydrated?
I wonder if she is having an allergic reaction or if it's related to yeast? I have very little experience and do not know what may be going on internally based on these symptoms.

Thank you so much to anyone who can help, and thank you to the BYC community for all the help you've already provided!

It may be an excess of sebum called sebaceous hyperplasia. It's often related to a vitamin A deficiency. The lice and dipping may simply be coincidental and not a cause.

Two things you can try. Give her vitamin A for a while and use Head and Shoulders shampoo in water as a solution and spray in on her skin, let sit for ten minutes and then spray rinse it off. Do this each day until her skin improves.

Thank you azygous! I really appreciate your help! For future reference, do you think we should avoid dipping the hens in the future? All the others seem fine but I'm hesitant to dip this one again. We just sprayed around her vent rather than dipping her a second time.

I'm not a believer in coincidences. Often things in life overlap in occurrence and it doesn't mean they are in any way related. Your hen has a skin condition that has popped up here on BYC every so often. In each case, it was not related to anything else.

But it is a good idea to plan on avoiding dipping her in the future just in case it triggers the condition. Try the vitamin A first. It may be as simple as correcting a deficiency.

Canned mackerel and raw liver are very good sources of vitamin A. It's safer than a supplement as vitamin A can be toxic in too large amounts.

Sorry I know this is an old thread but did the vitamin A work I have the exact same thing going on with 4 of my hens after treating for lice with permectrin
