Lonely duck

One of my peaking ducks died today leaving me with just one other duck. I'm really new to keeping ducks. I've read about the depression they can experience. My duck has a couple of chickens to hang out with, but I'm sure it's not the same. My issue is that it's January. I couldn't get ducklings this time of year and I don't know where to find any adult duck rescues. Does anyone have any ideas?

You can give your duck a mirror for now.

Where abouts do you live? You may be able to find duck listings on the Facebook marketplace. If you’re in the USA, there’s also Craigslist, and Metzer Farms ships nationwide & has sexed ducklings year round.

I might suggest rescuing from a local pond, but I believe bird flu is going around right now. It’d be risky.

Ducks need other ducks. The chickens should be fine for now. But sometimes the duck can accidentally kill or injure the chicken and the chicken can injure the duck. So for now they should be fine but definitely look into getting another duck/ducks when you can.

You can also give him a stuffed animal friend for now. Do you use Facebook? There are a lot of local backyard poultry type groups you can join and people are constantly trading chickens and ducks and other things on there.

I am sorry this is happening to you. I fear it might to me as well. Only 2 of mine hatched. May I ask what happened to your recently deceased duck?
