So, my 24-week-old pullet (not laying yet) became very lethargic. At first, she slept on the floor instead of roosting, and by the second night, I moved her inside so I could monitor her. She stopped eating and drinking on her own, spending most of the day standing still or lying down with her eyes closed. However, she could still walk, preen, stretch, and drink.
She had a few mites (not a heavy infestation), which I treated. Her vent was and still is clean. She has no missing feathers, injuries, bloating, or respiratory issues. Her crop is normal, empties appropriately overnight, and isn’t hard or sour. Since she wasn’t eating, I started tube feeding her on the second day. She pooped regularly, but her droppings were initially bright green and very liquid. Over time, they became less green and more solid. After feeding, she would become even more lethargic for a few hours but then perk up slightly, stretch, preen, and even scratch the ground - though still not eating on her own.
She had a fever of 42.8°C on day 2, which I managed to lower and it has remained stable at 41°C. I first treated her with Enrofloxacin (Baytril) for 48 hours, but there was no change. The vet then switched her to Trisulfon, which also treats coccidiosis. After 36 hours on Trisulfon, she keeps her eyes open for a few minutes at a time, she drank water on her own when I placed the bowl close to her and is a bit more alert, though still standing still with her eyes closed most of the time.
She's been in this coma-like state for the past 10 days (tube fed for 8 days and her weight is stable) - but I find it very confusing since she can and will preen, walk, stretch and try to dust bathe every so often. But it only lasts a few minutes and then she closes her eyes and goes back to "sleep".
Has anyone experienced a similar case?
