Does anyone have reputable contacts for people in the US that raise green jungle fowl?
I’m joining the Facebook groups for them, but it’s hard to tell what is a scam or what’s trustworthy for breeders on those groups. I know these birds are expensive and hard to find. I’m really interested in a rooster/cockerel in particular, or some eggs to try hatching. I’m even open to a hybrid or cross rooster. Maybe someone has a cock that isn’t up to their standards for breeding and willing to part with, but I can use in a breeding project I’m trying to start.
Just as a side project to run over the next few years, I’d like to introduce some green jungle fowl to get some of the unique feathering and especially the blue and yellow tones in the combs. We don’t get unique chickens and breeds without some experimentation and cross breeding. I’d like to try hybridizing to a few of my Swedish flower hens, as they have more of an array of unusual feather patterns and are a pretty old breed, plus are more cold tolerant and known for long lifespans and decent egg laying. I’m also curious how they’d cross out with a cream legbar hen [due to the feather patterns, and interest in having blue egg genes in the mix - I’d genetic test to maintain the blue/green eggs in roosters so it’s not lost in this line]. Overall I’d like to introduce and breed for color variation in combs, and those beautiful rooster feathers and crows. Plus broody instincts. Hopefully their egg production would be boosted slightly with years of selective breeding. I also might test crossing to Spanish Andalusian as they’ve been very cold tolerant for me despite being a warm climate bird, and they have very long wattles and large combs that might help show any blue color in the combs better. But overall they’d become a fun ornamental chicken variety with some unique traits. The hope would be to select for better coke tolerance over time. But I’d definitely be giving them supplemental heat and keeping them contained in a greenhouse coop I have for my chickens during the cold seasons, until I know when their crosses may be able to handle cold winters. Or even in my house if needed. I honestly don’t mind whatever is needed.
Anyway, I’ve seen people hybridize like this with some success in other countries where green jungle fowl are more commonly kept, and get some interesting results and roosters with different feathering and unique crows. Supposedly green jungle fowl traits don’t get “buried” as much as other jungle fowl when crossed to domestic chickens, and the traits just show up better. Plus their birds are easily tame and friendly, so they would end up making nice backyard flock birds.
I know most ant serious breeder is breeding these for purity and trying to maintain them, etc., and most may be against any form of outcrossing. Which I totally understand. So I know it may be extra hard for me to find someone willing to sell me any stock. That’s why I’m hoping someone might have one rooster that’s just not up to their breeding standards and won’t be good for pure breeding, but will work for my project [if the bird is in good health, but just does not meet SOP for green jungle fowl conformation]. I won’t be going around spreading the offspring as green jungle fowl, plus they won’t really look much like them besides a few little traits here and there. They won’t be watering down any gene pools or causing harm, just a potentially new and unique type of chicken if all goes as planned.
Even if I can just get on a waitlist for future years if anyone may have anything available some year, one day. I’m 22 so I’ve got my whole life to wait if needed I guess haha. But hey if I can find just one rooster someday, I’d love to experiment and see what kinds of varieties can be made, and if after a number of years breeding the offspring I can get the blue undertones to start to come out in their combs.
