Hello everyone,

I am still pretty green with my chicken knowledge (although I have owned chickens for the last 6 years). I have never come across this before and was wondering if anyone to answer my question.

This is one of my hens (he/she... I'm not really sure). She has a comb like no other but she lays large white eggs (I did watch her sit in the box until she produced one). What does everyone think? Is this just a hen? Does anyone know the breed?

All help and extra knowledge is much appreciated!

Looks like a Blue Minorca hen to me.

EDT: but yeah, as said above, she looks like an andalusian too. She could be any blue Mediterranean chicken breed. And Andalusians are more common than Minorcas.

When your trying to tell the difference between rooster and hen, in any breed, the best way is to look for the exclusively male saddle feathers. Take a look here and you'll see what I mean, especially when you compare your lady to the one that @AlleysChicks posted. Especially compared to your little rooster.

Those pictures are REALLY helpful! Thank you for posting them!

Some breeds just have laege combs, even on hens. Leghorn hens are nearly always mistaken for roosters because their combs are gigantic. The pictures posted are perfect examples of easy differences between rooster/hen
